Fate and The Oedipus Theory > Fate Concludes

© Chris Pass Jan. 2006
The third oracle, given in Oedipus at Colonus, receives a prophecy which says that whichever country that Oedipus dies in shall be blessed by the Gods. This serves as yet another sign of what fate has in store for Oedipus. His sons end up fighting over the kingdom in Thebes, resulting in a horrible bloodbath which leaves both dead. This fight between the brothers leads to Creon’s subsequent control of Thebes (Paul Roche).

It is hard to imagine all of these events happening, as depicted by the oracles, as complete and utter coincidence. When Oedipus announces the arrival of his death at the end of Oedipus at Colonus, he reveals his resting place only to Theseus. He informs him that if he is able to keep the location of his grave secret, that his kingdom will be blessed by the gods. Fate has thus run its course; Oedipus murdered his father, killed his mother, and through his death the lands of Theseus were blessed.
