After what seemed enough near death experiences for one lifetime, we arrived at the hostel. It was nice compared to the rest of the city. It was a brick complex with nicely kept trees and rock paths. It was gated in with armed guards patrolling the entrance, which made me wonder what they were trying to keep out.
A Sunday school class of children were playing and running around barefoot singing words I didn’t understand. When we unloaded our luggage, the children took it and carried it to our rooms. They were so happy to see us much like everyone else we met.

My room had the bare minimum: a cold tile floor, plain white walls, a closet, and two beds with mosquito nets. It was connected to a bathroom with a toilet, a sink, and a shower head sticking out of the wall and a small drain in the middle of the floor. There was no shower curtain so everything got drenched whenever the shower was turned on. The water was only cold and came from a tower right outside the hostel. It was unsanitary to drink or even brush our teeth with.
African nuns, in light blue instead of the traditional black I was use to seeing at home, made us dinner which was rice and goat meat. I missed familiarity and the luxuries of home so much! eating at the hostel
I wanted to feel safe, real food, hot (not to mention sanitary) water, and a place to sleep where I didn’t have to worry about bugs attacking me. After a restless night of attempted sleep and strange noises, we all piled back into the taxi van and drove into the city.
