Review of "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson
| In the short story “The Lottery,” Shirley Jackson describes all of the characters with great detail. One character that stood out from all of the others was a man by the name of Mr. Joe Summers. Mr. Summers was married to a bitter old woman and had no children, because of this everyone felt sorry for him. He lived in a village with about three-hundred people and did his best to know everyone. Mr. Summers was a round-faced man with a good sense of humor. He also had time and energy to devote to civic activities. He conducted the lottery, square dances, the teen-age club and the Halloween program in his town. For some people it seemed that his favorite thing to be a part of was the lottery. Every year he would arrive in the town square with a small black wooden box, ready to put the slips of paper with all the names inside. Mr. Summers was a well respected man in the town because of his honesty and politeness.
