Review of "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson

In the short story “The Lottery,” Shirley Jackson describes all of the characters with great detail. One character that stood out from all of the others was a man by the name of Mr. Joe Summers. Mr. Summers was married to a bitter old woman and had no children, because of this everyone felt sorry for him. He lived in a village with about three-hundred people and did his best to know everyone. Mr. Summers was a round-faced man with a good sense of humor. He also had time and energy to devote to civic activities. He conducted the lottery, square dances, the teen-age club and the Halloween program in his town. For some people it seemed that his favorite thing to be a part of was the lottery. Every year he would arrive in the town square with a small black wooden box, ready to put the slips of paper with all the names inside. Mr. Summers was a well respected man in the town because of his honesty and politeness.
