Graduation Day

© Vennesa Riddle, September 15, 2005
The day I realized I had really grown up, it hit me hard. I was graduating high school. It felt like it had only been two weeks ago that I was a senior shouting at pep-rallies and going to football games. The more I thought about it, it saddened me but also made me very happy. Graduation was one of the most important days of my life; I never knew it would feel so different and added so many new parts to my life.
Graduation day I woke up full of excitement. The seniors had to be at school at 7:00 A.M. for the breakfast, something Ohatchee has been doing for a long time. We discussed the big day while eating our lunchroom’s dry, crumbly biscuits and sour orange juice they had arranged for us. After carrying on for a while, we thought of a couple of jokes to make our graduation the most memorable of any others. Some of us also cried as the PowerPoint Presentation played; the juniors made it for the seniors as a surprise. It made us look back on the past memories and the good times we were about to leave behind.

At the ceremony, it was hot. The senior class as a whole was nervous and glad too. Over to the side, our sponsor sat up a memorial for a classmate who we lost in the 3rd grade due to a tornado. It was beautiful. As the ceremony went on, I got anxious. Finally, the principal was ready to give out our diplomas! One by one, we were called up to the stand. Before I knew it, everyone in the stands was bursting out with laughter. Our pranks worked! When we shook the principal’s hand and received our diploma, we exchanged it for bouncy balls. Mrs. Kines, our principal, had nowhere to put them. When she filled up her pockets, she started dropping them on the ground. When one particular student was called up, he knocked over the flowers. What looked like an accident was really meant to lighten things up a bit.

After graduation, the seniors gathered into a circle and threw our caps. Anyone would be able to feel the excitement a mile away. The seniors met back up with their parents for the tea that the juniors would host.

After everything was done and over with, one of our classmates decided to have a party at his house. When we got to his house, his dad had a huge bon fire sat up with tons of hot dogs and marshmallows. For once in my life, I felt completely stress free. We sat around the bon fire for hours just talking and listening to music.

Graduation was one of the best days of my life. It made me feel like I never felt in my life. The day was filled with joy and excitement. Many people will remember the graduation traditions, the pranks, and everything about that day for a long time.
